Always Something to Improve

Entrepreneurship might keep you up at night — but it always gets you out of bed in the morning

9th June 2025

We caught up with Alex Mugan, Director of Bray Cured, to hear how a passion for food turned into a fast-growing charcuterie business — and why combining craft with community is central to his vision.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey before launching the business?

Armed with a degree in medieval history from Cambridge, I got into cheffing and learned curing by that route nearly 20 years ago. A career in start-ups and SMEs followed, focused on sales and marketing, with curing a hobby which grew and grew before Bray Cured was launched in 2021. It's nice to combine 20 years' experience in SMEs, including a few as an MD for someone else, with running my own business and pursuing my passion.

What was your original vision when starting out?

To make innovative British charcuterie from local ingredients that top restaurants and curious consumers would want to buy. Pleasingly, we've done that.

What excites you most about being an entrepreneur?

A sense of purpose every day, I think. Sometimes it's stressful, of course, so I say that the great thing about entrepreneurship is that even if sometimes it's hard to sleep, it's always easy to get out of bed. There is never a day when you don't have something to attack/improve, and that's really energising.

What’s something about your business you’re particularly proud of?

Every year when the Great Taste Awards come in, that's a proud moment. You can't beat a customer telling you how much they enjoyed a product, though.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

The taste test! If you compare what we're producing to the mass market, well you just can't! At the end of the day, it is all about taste.

What is your business’s mission, and what values does your company hold?

To innovate in charcuterie using local ingredients. So, our values are quality, sustainability, and to promote British produce.

What attracted you to working with Crowd2Fund?

With our brand, we're building a community. We loved the idea of working with a community of investors who get to know and love our product and brand, and for us to be contributing to their success in return.

What’s your vision for the future of the company?

To continue our growth (we've doubled in size each year) and become the leading charcuterie producer in Britain. Simple!

At Crowd2Fund, we’re proud to support ambitious, values-driven businesses like Bray Cured — companies that blend passion with purpose and bring something genuinely different to the table. This is more than an investment opportunity; it’s a chance to back a bold British brand as it scales sustainably, rewards its supporters, and redefines what great food can be.
